Abstract:
This object stores the Avalanche Zone Boundaries and the hazard rating for each of the zones.
Purpose:
To provide a data layer for various mapping and analytical needs for use with other MOA GIS data sets. Data is stored and maintained as a feature data layer in SDE.
Supplemental_Information:
Zones are rated as "High Hazard", "Moderate Hazard", or "Island", (an area inside of an avalanche zone that poses no avalanche hazard).

This layer was created by taking what the consultant drew on topo mylars, reducing, aligning, and digitizing on the parcels base.
The source of the snow avalanche hazard maps is a study entitled: Anchorage Snow Avalanche Zoning Analysis, which was prepared for the MOA by Arthur Mears, P.E., September 1982. This study provides a methodology for defining high and moderate avalanche hazards, and delineates the general boundaries of these hazard areas on maps of the Anchorage Bowl, Chugiak-Eagle River, and Turnagain Arm/Girdwood areas. The snow avalanche hazard maps have not been adopted by the Municipality. Periodically, proposed site-specific amendments to these maps have been submitted to the Geotechnical Advisory Commission for its review and recommendations. The proposed map amendments and the Commission's recommendations are kept on file in the Planning Department.
