Abstract:

Street_segments depicts roads within the Municipality of Anchorage corporate area. Road lines are captured for both public and private roads. Currently, divided roads such as highways have been captured as a single center line.

Purpose:

To provide a data layer for various mapping and analytical needs for use with other MOA GIS data sets. Data is stored and maintained as a feature data layer in SDE.

Supplemental_Information:

Road lines captured through various source documents such as but not limited to: recorded subdivision plats, site plans, as-builts, GPS and aerial photography. Turnagain Arm communities excluding Girdwood are still being fully captured. Private access roads are also being captured as requested by Police (APD) or Fire (AFD).

Process_Description:

Street_segments was created in February 2008 from Roadnet - the former road GIS layer in use by the Municipality. Roadnet was originally developed from a survey centerline roads coverage. Over the years, those survey road centerlines have been spatially corrected to better represent the actual alginment of the existing road, using aerial photography, rectified site plans, GPS or heads-up digitizing. New roads added into Street_segments are entered to represent the actual alignment of the built road. Roads that are platted (created on paper) but not yet built are entered as the proposed centerline, but listed as NOT BUILT. Private access roadways such as access to condo developments or driveways on large tracts of land are entered and listed accordingly. This is specifically to aid Fire and Police emergency responders. In the future, we plan to develop divided lane roads, like highways, to be shown as such - to aid those same emergency responders routing needs.
